Is it a bird? Is it a fish? Is it a mystery?

The Pinnatus Batfish (also known as the Firebird Fish) has a dark brown coloured body with an orange stripe as outline.

This fine speciment grows rapidly and its coloration disappears as it grows. It grows up to 45 cm and resembles a fiery bird in flight when swimming.

The adults are found under overhangs on steep outer reef slopes and have been observed in large feeding groups. Juveniles are generally found in mangroves and inner reef zones in sheltered areas and are mostly found singly or in small groups. They are also more brightly coloured than adults.

They originate from Australia, Japan, Indonesia, East Pacific, and Central/West Pacific
